At the age of 28, Michael Krasny had a passion for computers and the world of high tech. So in 1982, he sat down to sell his first used PC in a Chicago Tribune classified ad. Soon he was selling 50-100 computers a week out of the back of his trunk, handling sales, delivery, and repair. Today CDW (Computer Discount Warehouse) sells more than 100,000 different computer products, including printers, software, accessories, and networking products.
Sales are mostly through catalogs, telephone, and the company's website. The company is able to consistently maintain a high level of repeat sales from existing customers by offering excellent customer service and competitive pricing. Customers have a designated account manager who keeps up with their particular needs and is able to offer appropriate add-ons and suggestions. Mantras such as, "People do business with people they like," and "It's only good if it's win/win", not only drive sales, but they have helped to shape the company; CDW has consistently been ranked as one of Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For.
