Grid computing involves networking many computers into a single, virtual architecture to handle really big processing problems. Argonne National Labs created the modern, working grid (Globus Project), and then its founders launched Univa to provide a commercial version as well as service and support (similar to RedHat's enterprise support of Linux). Along with Cleversafe, Univa puts Chicago at the virtual center of this open source/commercial source movement.
Steve Tuecke cofounded the Globus Project (the kernal of Grid computing) and was responsible for managing the development of Globus software, the Grid, and Web Services standards that underlie it. Tuecke was Univa’s first CEO, leading the company through funding and initial product. He began at Argonne National Laborator where in 1995 he also helped create the Distributed Systems Laboratory that became the premier Grid research and development group in the world.
